－今週のkeyword 【as as】について－

as関連が続きますが、今回はas as構文です。中学生のころ、この構文を習ったときには「なんか厄介な言い方をするんだなぁ」と思ったものです。でも、そのうち慣れれば、当然のようになりますから、言葉って不思議ですね。

大事な大事な用法
①「～と比べて、同じくらいに・・・」意味。
　（例文）Jack works as hard as Yoko.
　　　　　「ジャックはヨーコと同じくらい一生懸命働く」
②倍数表現を表す。倍数表現は前のasの前に置く。
　(例文）My brother has three times as many books as I.
　　　　　「私の兄は私の３倍の本を持っている」

ポイント
・as ～ as anyで最上の内容となる。
　（例文）Abe is as clever as any student in his class.
　　　　　「エイブはクラスで他のどの生徒に劣らず賢い」
・as ～ as everで最上の内容となる。
　（例文）Edison is as great a inventor as ever lived.
　　　　　「エジソンは古来まれな発明家だ」
・前のasは副詞。直後に形容詞や副詞を取る。

解説
(1)as any bodyを選ぶことでhas seen as many foreign movies as anybody「どの誰ともおなじくらい多くの映画を見ている」、つまり「誰にも負けないくらい多くの（一番多くの）」という意味になる。
訳：ヒロコはクラスの誰よりも多くの外国映画を見ている。

(2)as～asの最初のasは副詞なので、そのあとには形容詞か副詞がくる。この条件を満たすのは２か４となるが、４は意味が通じない。＜as～as S can＞で「Sができるだけ～」という意味。
訳：ジェフとジェニーはハワイのおじを訪ねるために、できるだけたくさんのお金をためた。

(3)＜as+原級+as ever lived＞で「古来まれな～」という意味。（例）Shakespeare is as great a poet as ever lived.「シェークスピアは古来まれな詩人である」
訳：彼は古来まれな偉大なる学者である。

ジェフとジェニーはハワイのおじを訪ねるために、できるだけたくさんのお金をためた。

as as構文って、慣れないと何となく語順に違和感があるよね。暗唱文を多くして、しっかりと覚えましょう。この文は前のasの後に、形容詞が来ること、as ～ as can「できるだけ～」の構文が覚えられるのでとても便利！
