−今週のkeyword 【as as】 について−

今回はas soon asなどの、「群接続詞」と呼ばれるもので、asを用いたものを学びます。asとasの間に何が入るかで、意味が決まりますので、しっかり覚えていきましょう！

大事な大事な用法
��as soon as「〜するとすぐに」の意味。
　（例文）Call me as soon as you arrive in Tokyo.
　　　　　「東京に着いたらすぐに電話を下さい」
��as far as「〜の限り（では）」の意味。
　（例文）As far as I know, John was an honest man.
　　　　　「私が知る限りは、ジョンは正直な男だった」
��as long as「〜する限りは」の意味。
　（例文）I'll never forget you as long as I live.
　　　　　「私が生きている限り、あなたのことは忘れない」

ポイント
・as far asとas long asの違いに注意しよう！
　as far asは制限や範囲を表し、「〜の限り（では）」という意味になる。
　as long asは時間的限度、条件を表し、「〜する限りは」という意味。
→「見渡す限り」という場合はas far as
→「きれいに使う限り」という場合はas long as

解説
(1)as soon as 〜は「〜するとすぐに」、as long as 〜は「〜でありさえすれば、〜もの間」、as well as 〜は「〜だけでなく」という意味である｡as far as「〜限り正解。
訳：私が判断するかぎり、これは彼女の写真にちがいない。

(2)空欄の前は許可を与える表現となっている。また空欄のあとで条件を示しているので＜as long as〜＞「〜しさえすれば」という意味の条件を示す表現を用いる。
訳：使い終わったときにガソリンタンクを満タンにしておいてくれさえすれば私の車を使ってもいいですよ。

(3)選択肢から文意の通るものを選ぶ。duringは前置詞なので不適。untilやwhileは意味をなさない。as soon asは「〜するとすぐに」という意味｡
訳：私はその知らせを聞くとすぐに家を出た。

今回のお薦め暗唱文
It must be her photograph as long as I can judge.
「私が判断する限り、それは彼女の写真に違いない」

as long asは「〜である限り」という条件を表しますね。as far asとの違いを意識しましょう。また、この文はmustが「〜に違いない」という推量の意味で使われています。これも重要。さらにphotographのアクセントの位置は第一音節です。センター試験にも出たよ！
